Death

The somber nature of the Department of Death's task is matched only by the nature of its department head. Death themself is a somber, serious individual, but this does not mean that they are cruel or emotionless. On the contrary, Death's expressionless face is, by their own admission, a facade, a coping mechanism for dealing with daily interactions with the unfortunate ends of human lives across history. Death has mastered control over their own emotions, and is understanding when their employees fail to meet the same high standards, though they encourage the treatment of the dead with detachment: the Dominion of Spheres is here to keep the universe in tact, a task which far overshadows any individual lives.

Background

Death traces their origins back to the Cucuteni–Trypillia culture of Eastern Europe, almost 7000 years ago. The people of Death's erstwhile domain understood the cycle of life and death, and practiced a tradition of ritual house-burning, in which they would burn entire settlements to allow the spirits of their homes to pass on and be born anew. Their people also practiced an early form of agriculture, learning how to tend to the lives and death's of their plants and animals.

Description

Not far from their classical depiction, Death wears a dark robe and carries a scythe - though theirs is bronze, rather than the more modern iron. Death is not a skeleton, though they are a relatively pale-skinned individual.
